Grey Reef Fishing Report January, 2020

Watch the weather and hit the River!

The Fishing at Grey Reef is really great right now but the trick is getting a decent weather window.   The fish have been sliding back into the lower halves of the runs as the water is cold!  We have been picking up fish swinging flies in the middle and tail outs of the upper 3 runs of the reef. Swing a small vanilla bugger or a natural pine squirrel leech.  As far a nymphing goes it is very effective with, Black and Red Barbwire midges in size 18, Mayhem Midges (gray and black size 18),  Rock worms(Red and Purple), and also Pine Squirrel Leeches in Natural and Rusty.  Like the swung bugs concentrate your efforts on the middle and the bottom of the runs as the fish are sliding back in the runs due to cold water temps.  Speaking of cold, I wouldn’t recommend floating right now as there is an ice jam about a mile above Lusby, but you can wade fish the upper 4 holes and the fishing is great.  The ice jams change very frequently so give us a call for a fishing and an ice report.  307-277-6282
