Happy Two Five everybody. Here at Wyoming Fly Fishing we are off to a great start with a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon! 🤘
The winter fishing is great right now. The Reef is fishing well with nymphs as well as swung flies! For whatever reason these wintertime trout love a swung fly in January and February. Cast straight out ninety toward the far bank then let the fly swing all the way to the dangle. Hot swingers are the Kreelex, the Rusty Trombone, and the Thin Lizzy. Don’t trout set! Let them come tight then slow raise toward your bank. If you prefer to indicate, we have some great midge patterns in the shop. Purple Mayhems as well as gray mayhems have been the ticket this last week. Also, the ever trusty “Leech and Chong” leeches (black and natural). And purple and red rockworms. Don’t leave home without them!
The Mile is still fishing good too. Watch the weather! This time of year, that road can drift in pretty substantially. If you can get a non-windy day the fishing can be fantastic. Similar patterns to the Reef as far as what is buggy. Also, swinging flies is productive.
Fremont canyon conditions are great. Midges, midges, midges! Two of your favorite midge patterns three to four feet under a strike indicator is the ticket. Rock worms (purple and red) and leeches (black and natural) are always a good idea this time of year.
The Bighorn in Thermopolis is probably my favorite winter fishery of all of them. These big bows are super fun to target in the winter! Nymphing midges, sow bugs and scuds is probably the most effective way to target these fish. Also, stripping streamers can produce. I recommend short choppy strips and try and get deep.
Swing by the shop for some bugs and a map to a good run! Bring beer and the map could lead to a Great Run!
